Vitamin C

The Miracle of Vitamin C

So what is so great about Vitamin C? After all, there must be a good reason that it is the most widely taken supplement. Of course, everyone has heard that Vitamin C can help reduce the length and severity of a cold, but did you know that it can also help ward off the Avian bird flu, help asthma sufferers cut down on corticosteroid medication, and may even slow down the aging process!
How much is TOO much?

While the U.S. RDA for the average person is 90 mg per day, there is much controversy about how much is too much. Linus Pauling, two time Nobel Peace Prize winner, recommended an average of 10,000 mg per day in his book How to Live Longer and Feel Better. This is generally regarded as too much by traditional medicine. However, Vitamin C is water soluble so there is no concern about it causing toxicity in the body. In fact, it is one of the least toxic substances there is.
Why Do We Need Vitamin C?

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is essential for several body functions. It is used in the production of collagen for connective tissues such as the skin, teeth and bones. It is also needed to help generate neurotransmitters dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline for a healthy nervous system. Since Vitamin C is an antioxidant, it plays a role in helping to prevent diseases such as cancer and atherosclerosis by neutralizing free radical damage.

It is also involved in helping the adrenals make corticosteroid hormones and, therefore, asthma sufferers may be able to decrease their corticosteroid medication when a high dose Vitamin C supplement is added to the diet. There is also evidence that viruses such as the common cold and even the Avian Bird Flu can be treated, or even prevented, with high dose Vitamin C supplements since they are thought to be caused by a deficiency in the vitamin. And a recent study in Japan revealed that Vitamin C may even help slow down the aging process! Vitamin C is truly one of nature's miracles!
